The Bryce Thomson Scholarship Award – Applications Open 15 July 2020
The National Ice Cream Retailers Association (NICRA) annually sponsors the Bryce Thomson Scholarship Award for full-time or part-time employees of Active members. The Board of Directors of NICRA established the award in 1995, honoring Bryce Thomson, a man whose 55-plus years of commitment to the ice cream industry is unparalleled.
Active Members: Please consider nominating a deserving young person, who must also be one of your employees, for the 2020 Bryce Thomson Scholarship Award.
The official application link for the Bryce Thomson Scholarship Award will be available on this page on July 15 2020 and will close on September 1 2020.
Funds must be used within one year of the award.
The winners will be announced at the 2020 NICRA Annual Convention in Orlando FL in November. Students will also have a choice as to how the money is awarded, for tuition, books, lab fees or room and board.
Employees of Active Members, in good standing, are eligible for a scholarship award.
Please note - In your letter of recommendation, please comment on how you perceive the student’s need and family support or situation. All information is confidential. Your recommendation will count toward the selection criteria.
All of these elements must be included in the online submission for the student to be considered for a scholarship award. The application will not be complete and unable to be submitted without these elements.
WHO IS BRYCE THOMSON
Bryce Thomson was President of the NICRA Board of Directors 1965 and had a great hand in shaping the organization since that time. His monthly publication of "The Sundae School" was famous in the industry and contained facts and helpful hints to help ice cream retailers.
It first appeared as an insert in the NICRA Bulletin, but started as its own separate publication in 1982.
At the convention in 1985, Bryce Thompson was granted Life Member status in the NICRA organization, the first, and to this date, only person to have received this honor.
Bryce's health prevented him from producing any more newsletters and his last newsletter was the February/March 2008 issue. Bryce attended the convention in 2006 and we all celebrated his 90th birthday with cake and cards from all.
The man who shaped so many young ice cream entrepreneurs and provided his knowledge and experience for so many is honored in the naming of this important scholarship fund.
